"Naked beneath your clothing"

by John Veltheim
The birth of this article was an easy one. The gestation period, however, spanned many years. In John's years of clinical practice he became acutely aware of the abyss that, in the majority of people, seemed to separate mind from body. The abyss resulting from centuries of societal dictates concerning moral and ethical codes of behavior. Dictates that have given rise to man's present day rejection of that which is most natural and most beautiful - the human body. His motivation came from seeing the limitations people placed upon themselves and, as a result, their health.

Ease you pain

Most people feel some sort of pain; be it physical pain such as a sore knee, or emotional pain such as
anxiety or doubt. Or perhaps you've got so used to the pain that you've blocked it out.
This article introduces three ways to help you ease your pain. Try them out and see which, or which
combination, works for you. Or what variation you come up with for yourself!
Distance healing. In the audio version of Ease Your Pain I also offer you distance healing. Healing

Saddle Up

Body Talk is a unique healthcare modality in that it addresses the body in a truly integrative, holistic way. The certified Body Talk practitioner recognizes that the bodymind complex functions as a synchronicity and not as a bundle of autonomously functioning parts. There is a proper sequence to follow and a series of questions that the body is asked. Neuro-muscular responses are how the body responds back. Being able to read them is the practitioner’s responsibility. The body has an innate wisdom that allows it to heal itself and to directly communicate with affected parts or areas. Bras and breast cancer by Ralph L. Reed, Ph.D.

Although I am an environmental chemist (Ph.D in biochemistry), I have been doing a lot of literature research on breast cancer since I saw an article on the National Library of Medicine database over a year ago. That article documented an increase in breast cancer rates between women who do wear bras versus those that do not.
That Harvard study fascinated me and I searched the medical literature for possible explanations. In January 1996, I discovered the book by Singer and Grismaijer and their explanation of impaired lymphatic flow intrigued me. I have since read everything that I can find on lymphatic flow. What I have found has amazed me, but that is another story. I can supply you with lots of info if you like. In essence, what Singer and Grismaijer found was that the odds of getting breast cancer dramatically increased with bra-wearing over 12 hours per day.
  • Women who wore their bras 24 hours per day had a 3 out of 4 chance of developing breast cancer (in their study, n=2056 for the cancer group and n=2674 for the standard group).
  • Women who wore bras more than 12 hour per day but not to bed had a 1 out of 7 risk.
  • Women who wore their bras less than 12 hours per day had a 1 out of 152 risk.
  • Women who wore bras rarely or never had a 1 out of 168 chance of getting breast cancer. The overall difference between 24 hour wearing and not at all was a 125-fold difference.
The results of this study are compelling, even considering that it was not a "controlled study" for other risk factors. Bear in mind that known (published in medical journals) risk factors for breast cancer are mostly in the range of less than three-fold differences. It should also be noted that Singer and Grismaijer surveyed bra-wearing behavior of the past, which is excellent for a disease with such a long development period. In their book, the authors show how most of the known risk factors can be related to bra-wearing behavior and/or the lymphatic system.

For example, breast feeding and pregnancy cause full development of the mammary lymphatics. Also, women of higher economic status have higher breast cancer rates, and one would expect that they would wear their bras more hours per day. Women who excercise have lower risk, which could relate to better lymphatic circulation (and I would add, more breast movement). To this discussion, I would like to add that lymphatic circulation in many tissues (especially the primary lymphatics) are highly dependent on MOVEMENT.

When you sit for a long time on an airplane flight, your feet and ankles can swell, because lymphatic circulation goes to near zero. Wearing a bra, especially a constricting one with underwires, and especially to bed, prevents normal lymphatic flow and would likely lead to anoxia (lower than normal oxygen content), which has been related to fibrosis, which has been linked to increased cancer risk.
Women evolved under conditions where there was BREAST MOVEMENT with every step that they took when they walked or ran. My reading of the scientific literature about lymphatic flow shows me that this may be as important as the constriction factor. Every subtle bounce of the breast while moving, walking, running, etc. gently massages the breast and increases lymphatic flow and thus cleans the breast of toxins and wastes that arise from cellular metabolism.

Of course, there may be other mechanisms for the damage that bras apparently cause. One such mechanism could be temperature. Breasts are external organs and have a naturally lower temperature. Cancers can be temperature-dependent. Breast cancer is hormone-dependent. Temperature can alter hormone function. Breast temperature changes throughout the monthly cycle.
All these facts are from the medical literature. By whatever mechanism, someone will eventually explain why Singer and Grismaijer found a 125-fold difference in cancer rates between bra-free breasts and those constricted by 24-hour-per-day bra-wearing. If you haven't already done so, I suggest that you read the book by Singer and Grismaijer. (By the way, I have no connection to the authors; I think that they live in Canada.)

Also, just for an interesting experiment, the next time you walk down the street, notice visually how constricting bras are. On many women you can actually see "dents" around the sides of their chests where there bras are, even in something as opaque as a black t-shirt.
A physical therapist friend of mine, after reading Dressed to Kill, said that she was amazed at what she saw in her practice at a local medical clinic. She noticed how many women have red creases and grooves on the their bodies caused by their bras. Singer and Grismajer also suggest that you simply stop wearing one for two weeks and see how you feel.

By the way, I have heard that they are currently working on a new study. The research is to study whether benign fibrocystic breast disease can be treated by stopping bra-wearing for eight weeks. That should be very interesting; this time they are involving medical doctors, from what I've heard.
Years ago, many people thought that the idea of cigarettes causing lung cancer was funny. Even if further research with highly controlled studies only shows a difference of 5-fold, or even 2-fold, it will be no laughing matter.

Let your body do the talking

Bodytalk is a simple yet effective holistic therapy that stimulates our bodies' innate healing ability to initiate healing and maintain health. Birgit Ottermann tried it out.

The first time I discovered BodyTalk was at the Natural and Organic Fair in Cape Town earlier this year. I was on my out of the venue, when I passed a stall where dozens of people were queuing. Despite my tired feet and information overload, curiosity got the better of me, and I went to see what the fuss was all about. What I discovered was mind-boggling, even though I was quite sceptical at first.
After a brief explanation of BodyTalk (in a nutshell: it is a holistic therapy that helps to repair communication within the body in order for it to return to perfect balance and health) one of the practitioners on duty offered me a mini session to show me the effects: he lightly tapped with his fingers on my head and then on my chest - he repeated this a few times and voila! That was it!

When he saw my disbelief and complete scepticism, he just smiled and told me to go home and see for myself whether I felt any improvement. I was left speechless. Was this the treatment? What had he actually done? And why were so many people falling for it?
I went back to the office and told my colleagues about my "ridiculous" encounter. However, I soon had to eat my words. That very same evening I discovered that my sinus headaches (that had been plaguing me for days) had disappeared - and so did my backache. Furthermore, I felt very centred and full of energy. It was as if a shift had taken place in my body.
This surprising BodyTalk experience bugged me for weeks until I decided to make work of it and see a BodyTalk practitioner for a full consultation.
My visit to BodyTalk practitioner Karen Fair in Durbanville, near Cape Town, turned out to be truly fascinating.

What is BodyTalk?
I discovered that, unlike body language where you use your body to talk to other people, with BodyTalk, your body talks to you.

"The short treatment that you received at the Natural and Organic Fair is called the Cortices Technique, one of the core techniques of the BodyTalk System that is used to bring about significant improvement in health in just a few minutes," Karen explains to me.

"BodyTalk is a holistic therapy that utilises the body's ability to heal itself. During the treatment that you received, communication between the two hemispheres of your brain was improved and balanced. This improved the efficiency of the brain - thereby boosting overall health. It's like hitting the reset button on your brain's computer and making your body work at optimal levels again."

So, even if you don't consciously know what your problem areas are in your body, your brain is "reset" to re-synchronise energy systems so they can operate as nature intended, and accordingly your body will be able to address the imbalances directly.

Stress causes disconnection
According to Karen each system, cell, and atom is in constant communication with each other at all times.

"However, through exposure to the stresses of day-to-day life, these lines of communication can become compromised or disconnected, which then leads to a decline in physical, emotional and/or mental well-being."

Reconnecting these lines of communication enables the body's internal mechanisms to function at optimal levels, thus repairing and preventing disease while rapidly accelerating the healing process.
"In this way BodyTalk stimulates the body's innate ability to balance and heal itself on all levels," Karen adds.
So, where does the tap-tap-tap (on my head and chest) come in?

Neuromuscular biofeedback

Karen explains that the BodyTalk practitioner facilitates communication with the innate wisdom of the body by using neuromuscular biofeedback.

"By understanding that your body has an inherent knowledge of itself, the BodyTalk practitioner is able to quickly and easily ask your body what communication circuits have become compromised and in which order these lines of communication need to be re-established for the fastest possible healing process to occur.

"After asking a series of yes or no questions, the client's own body wisdom leads the practitioner to locate the imbalances within the body that are a priority, or are not communicating correctly and are out of balance with the rest of the body.

Next the practitioner holds the areas that have been highlighted by the testing procedure and taps gently on the head and the sternum.
"By tapping on the head, the brain becomes aware of and repairs the communication. Tapping on the sternum, or heart, ensures that the new pattern is stored and communicated throughout the whole body," Karen says.

'Strange, but true'

I found the whole tapping exercise a bit amusing and hard to believe. But, even though it sounds a bit outlandish to me, I have to admit that it really does work. It somehow brings about positive change and balance in your body.

After my chat with Karen, a full BodyTalk session followed. I lay down on a treatment table, fully clothed and closed my eyes. Karen commenced by gently using my arm to establish the Yes/No communication. She used the BodyTalk Protocol Chart to navigate through every facet of my body and whenever a weakened or broken energy circuit in my bodymind complex was identified, my arm moved involuntarily. (I swear I did not move it consciously.)

As I don't have major health problems, there were no dramatic revelations, but once again I did feel very energised and focused at the end of the session, and my backache from sitting too long hours in front of the computer, vanished. Interestingly enough, Karen also detected the fact that my senses of taste and smell are not always 100% in sync and that I hate smoking. This could also mean something on a more figurative level, but the message about smoking is spot-on! Because of my sensitive sinuses, cigarette smoke can actually make me sick.

Perfect First Aid tool
BodyTalk has been credited with some major health improvements for a great number of people ranging from relief from insomnia, chronic pain, migraines, concentration problems and hyperactivity, allergies and depression to chemotherapy support and help to quit smoking. It can also be applied very successfully on your pets and other animals.

BodyTalk is also an important First Aid Tool that is non-invasive, safe and very simple. It can, for example, help to stop bleeding and to stabilise a patient from a loss of blood and shock, until specialised health care arrives. The BodyTalk Access programme, which features 5 techniques for the care of everyday health challenges, is taught across South Africa and takes only one day to learn. It includes the BodyTalk "Fast Aid" technique and is a great tool, particularly for mums and school teachers.

'Miracle' recovery from a coma

However, for me the best testimonial for BodyTalk is the amazing recovery of a 16-year-old Cape Town girl, Vicky, who fell into a coma after a major car accident in which she sustained severe injuries.

Says Karen: "The hospital file said 'severe brain injury' and the neurosurgeon gave her 5% chance of coming out of the coma or recovery." However, Karen's colleague, BodyTalk Access Trainer Laurel Bramley, started giving Vicky BodyTalk sessions from the night of the accident and continued daily.

"She came out of the coma on the 6th day. "The hospital staff called Vicky their 'miracle girl'. She went home after only five weeks and after six weeks she was walking with the aid of a crutch. Her functioning is as normal and she is almost fully rehabilitated."

Health notes: Tap lessons align body and mind

By Sarah Stacey

Our brains and bodies are in constant communication through our nervous system. Additionally, many biological processes (notably our hearts) run on electrical impulses, and some scientists and health professionals believe that the human body is surrounded by a weak electrical field, which also contains and transmits information.

According to London-based Britt Jorgensen, who practises a mind-body therapy called BodyTalk: 'This invisible surface energy sends messages faster than even our nerve fibres. Unfortunately, it can be compromised by injury or stress. BodyTalk aims to repair any weaknesses so our brain and body can work smoothly together and we feel truly well.'

BodyTalk draws knowledge from yoga, Chinese medicine, chiropractic and osteopathy and has spread to 40 countries due, says Britt, to its 'great results with physical, emotional and mental imbalances'.
'I can stop a migraine in its tracks, or make an existing one less intense. I don't know how it works, but it does'

Therapists identify trouble spots using muscle feedback then rebalance them by tapping specific areas of the head and chest bone. It may sound like mumbo jumbo but I've experienced the power of tapping meridians (energy lines) through another practice (Thought Field Therapy), so it wasn't hard to be convinced of the benefits of BodyTalk when a colleague reported her experience during six sessions over six months: 'I've suffered for years with regular, distressing migraines.

Britt didn't try to find the cause but explained that Bodytalk "asks" the client's body (you stay fully clothed) what it needs to function more efficiently. Given the right help, it has an incredible ability to heal itself.

'At each session, practitioners use muscle feedback – gently pulling on your arm – to key into the body's self-knowledge and highlight any weak links. They then carry out a series of taps on your head and chest to fix any weakness and save the change in
your body's memory.

'In one session, Britt picked up an imbalance relating to my back and neck – I do often find neck ache precedes a headache – and that I needed to let go of feelings of anger. I felt much calmer afterwards.
'I get headaches less frequently now: if I feel one coming I find a quiet place to tap my cortices [see below]. This can stop a migraine in its tracks, or make an existing one less intense. I don't know how it works, but it does.'

My colleague booked into a one-day BodyTalk Access Course, which teaches DIY techniques including 'cortices' (below), which helps to reduce stress and sharpen mental focus. 'It's like toothpaste for the brain, leaving you with a lovely zingy feeling. On a busy day, I do it several times: it really helps.'
Cortices Step By Step

The cortices refer to the four brain lobes (sections); this two-minute technique helps reduce stress.
  1. Place your left hand, fingers closed, on the back of your head at the base of the skull.

  2. With the fingertips of your right hand facing the back of your head and spread out, gently tap your crown while taking one deep breath in and out.
  3. Next, breathe deeply in and out once while tapping the centre of your chest under your collarbone with your right fingertips slightly spread.
  4. Move your left hand up a hand's width, and repeat steps 2 and 3.
  5. Repeatedly move your left hand up until you've covered the mid-line of your skull from the base to just above your eyebrows. Your right hand stays tapping your crown then chest each time; when your left hand reaches the crown, just tap on top of it with your right hand.
  6. Now cover the sides of your head (just above the ears) with both hands, fingers pointing backwards.
  7. Remove your right hand – leaving the left in position – and tap your head and chest, as in steps 2 and 3.
  8. Repeat on the other side of your head.

New BodyTalk research presented at leading scientific conference, ISSSEEM.

Jul 23, 2010
By Dr. Don Ka'imi Pilipovich

Dr. Don Ka'imi Pilipovich, Vice President for Academic development at the IBA presented new BodyTalk research at the International Society for the Study of Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine (ISSSEEM), in June.

The theme of this year's conference was Evidence-Based Spirituality, and a specific sub-question was "How can prayer and psychic healing be taught more effectively and more widely?" Dr. Pilipovich presented research he produced in partnership with the Centre for Biofield Sciences in Pune, India. He sent BodyTalk sessions to subjects from a distance and they were scanned and had intake before and after. 100% of subjects showed positive results. This is the first time that scientific research about BodyTalk has been presented at the ISSSEM conference, the cutting edge conference for the scientific study of energy medicine.

There is ample evidence in the literature that prayer has a beneficial health effect, but the subject is not well-defined. Dr. Pilipovich's paper begins by defining that prayer and psychic healing is a type of intention based medicine. In other words, praying for someone is having a positive intention for their well-being. But very often having a positive intention is not enough to have consistent results.
"BodyTalk is also a form of intention based medicine, but instead of having a general intention, we follow a rigorous protocol to develop a specific balancing formula for each client. This is also a positive intent, but it is combined with specific directions to the client's innate wisdom about how it could function in more balance." Says Dr. Pilipovich.

To emphasize the fact that BodyTalk works solely by directing intention, the study was designed to measure the effects of distance BodyTalk sessions. Dr. Thornton Streeter from the Center from Biofield Sciences in Pune, India, arranged for subjects to be scanned with a PIPP machine, a GDV machine and a Thermal Imaging machine, before and after the sessions. These imaging devices measure heat and other electromagnetic emissions from the body and showed dramatic changes in our study. The subjects were divided into two groups, one group received sessions and the other group or control subjects were scanned but did not receive sessions. Dr. Pilipovich sent the test subjects in India, distance BodyTalk sessions from his clinic in Boulder, Colorado.
The results were dramatic. All test subjects showed much more significant changes in biofield readings than the control subjects. And all test subjects reported positive changes in health two days after the sessions. In comparison, only minimal changes or none were reported by the control subjects.

The paper was well-received and we feel that it well answered the question of how to teach healing more effectively and more widely: learn BodyTalk!
An abstract of the research paper and an audio download of the lecture given by Dr. Pilipovich at the conference is available at The full study will be available when completed.

The amygdala

by Dr. John Veltheim
The amygdala is an almond-shaped structure in the center of the brain. It has direct links to the reptilian brain, the limbic brain, and the cortex, and is the key to our vital survival mechanisms. It has the ability to observe any situations we are confronted with, assess them as either potentially dangerous or harmless by scanning its memory banks for previous similar experiences, then make an immediate decision as to whether we are in danger. If the decision is that we are in a threatened state, it sends signals to the appropriate areas of the brain to take action to avoid the danger. This constitutes an early warning system that is very sensitive. This sensitivity is important because it is so essential to our
